Top 5 Clubs We Wish Were Still Open

What happened to the good ol’ days?  Whether it were the clubs, the music or just life in general!  Here we have captured our five favorite clubs that we wish were still open!

5. Atlantis

This club was notorious for a rotating dance floor above the water, but most importantly, a clear glass fishbowl that kept patrons warm during the winter line ups.

4. Club Ménage

Long after being closed for over six years, Club Ménage is still known to be one of the greatest legendary clubs in the heart of Downtown Toronto!  Known for its “Wayback Playbacks” hosted by one of Toronto’s most recognized voices, Tony Monaco, Club Ménage has secured a title as one of the longest running Wednesday night parties in the city! Don’t be fooled, clubbers came here religiously and had no issue going to work or school with a hangover the next day.

3. Paparazzi

Despite this club being in Richmond Hill, people from all outskirts of Toronto came here to party.  With the best DJ line up in the city and home to the Z1035 Top 10 at 10 countdown featuring: DJ Pauly P, DJ Danny D, The Hammer and Tony Monaco. These class acts turned this nightclub into Toronto’s hot spot.  Known for its VIP treatment, Paparazzi offered a membership card to its regulars, but not without a price. This luxurious membership card set you back roughly $550; worth every penny!

2. Palazzo

Between the original location on the Airport strip, and the relocation to Jane and Highway 7, the name Palazzo should give you a vivid image of what the club was like!  An Italian palace that could fit up to 3,000 people, and open from Thursday to Saturday, Palazzo was known as the Woodbridge ‘hot spot’.  Although they played various genres of music, it was definitely the go-to place for dance music.

1. Meow

Although Meow (also known as “The Pussycat”) was only open for twenty months, it was around long enough to make an impact in the Toronto nightlife community. Just off of Lake Shore Blvd. W., east of Windermere Ave, Meow operated with two floors and had the biggest mirrored disco ball in the city. “Platinum Fridays” and “Purr Saturdays” was home to the exotic masked cat women who swung from the ceiling, together with the go-go dancers who were visible through the windows from outside the club.  This was the very first night club I attended when I was fourteen years old right before it shut its doors on February 5, 2001.

  1. Does The Docks really count as a runner up? The venue is still open under the name Sound Academy & (I assume) different ownership…but the venue is still open

  2. You’re right, but it’s not the same! Just like SET Boutique is the new Club Menage. Once a club has gone down under, along with name change and renovations it took away from the memories that people had. Mind you Sound Academy is only open for special events.

  4. These are all clubs that 905ers would venture to. Don’t get me wrong, I live in the 905, but it’s a way different vibe when people that aren’t from Toronto end up in the city. What about Whiskey Saigon? The Elmo? MFN? Which became Devil’s Martini? Anyway, just my thoughts.

  5. Yes, Money did play hip hop thanks to the multi level building and Sunday’s were popping! Also, G Spot was another amazing club that was right in the heart of club district.. One of my faves along with Plastique for sure!

  7. A list clearly written by someone who likes bad dance music and clubs filled with 905ers and college kids.

System Soundbar, Industry, RPM, Limelite, Boom Boom Room.
Those are the legendary clubs. The rest come and go like trash blowing in the wind.

  8. I’m 45, so I’m talking as an old school ‘head. I’m gonna go back to the 80s and 90s. Berlin/Plastique lounge/Club Z/Copa/RPM /Diamond/Roxy Blu/mad bar/Spectrum /Sweetwater /117 Peter/Joker/Tonic/Fluid/Easy and the 5th -still there /everything aLong Adelaide and Richmond/488 Yonge St….and the grandaddy of them all, my home from 1986-1988 for Saturday nights and special occasions and new years eve…Twilight Zone! The Assoon brothers brought house music to the forefront..and I personally will never forget that place.

  10. I fondly remember FX and Meow.

FX because it was the first MASSIVE club I went to, and I thought “where are all these hot women come from?” Being 16 or 17, it was eye opening.

Meow… wow. It was over-the-top extravagant, with the ‘secret’ way in through the bar at the front. The girls on the swings way up high and the energy were legendary.

    damn, I feel old.

  11. This list is SERIOUSLY flawed and illustrates the Author’s age. First off, no Toronto club as ever eclipsed RPM. Where else launched Career’s like Chris Sheppard & Matt C and staged acts like The Beastie Boys, the Ramones, NIN (Nine Inch Nails) Billy Idol, Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses and, most famously, The Rolling Stones,. Or where Roger Waters and David Gilmour from Pink Floyd got in a fistfight at the bar. Other notable Clubs are The Big BOP and Barracuda, just to mention a few.

  12. this list is flawed…if your talking about toronto night clubs hear from a guy that spent 29 years managing them 1 has to be the pheonix 4 nights of diffrent musics plus 3 to 4 concerts per week………rpm was great but didnt last as long
2 the OZ…..before industry there was the oz bring house acts to perform also doing 4 nights 4 genres of music all packed..
3 fliud came and changed nightlife and started off highlighting upscale clubbing but before fluid in the same space was stillife
4 has to be go go 5 nights weds to sunday all 3 floor jammed in 1989 this is back in the day when club were more like new York wed gay night. thurs house and dance friday night rock and dance etc sunday night rock night..spread over 4 floors including the roof top patio this place was legendary…..if your list is your top five them u were unfortunate to not experience the great legendary clubs of toronto…..
